Sign Painting 101: Intro to brush lettering - Spring 2024

Intro to hand lettering with brush & paint. This 2 day workshop will cover: Quick history lesson about Studio Signs and the sign painting trade. Brush & paint education (discuss different types of brushes, paints, & reducers). Basic brush handling & strokes (how to mix paint, pallete and pull strokes). Sign painting posture & breathing techniques (proper form & focus). Basic letterforms- block & casual (practice, practice, practice).  We begin with an in depth lesson on drafting properly shaped block letters and progress to painting them with a brush.  Then we move on to learning and painting the signpainter's casual letterstyle.  Lettering tricks- highlights & shades (have some fun with colors).

All students will take home a Studio Signs casual alphabet exemplar as  well as your very own lettering brush and mahlstick so you can continue  practicing.  Remember, practice is the most important key to lettering  success.  And of course you get to keep all of the practice sheets you  can paint!

Attendees will get live demos & instruction, one-on-one learning,  printouts and plenty of hands-on experience.  The class is  taught in a fun, encouraging environment and the workshops are always an  enjoyable and memorable time.  Includes a light lunch and refreshments.

The instructors: Father & son team of Studio Signs  Melvin Lee has been in the sign industry since 1970 and owner of Studio Signs since 1984. Nick Lee was born into the world of sign painting and is the current owner of Studio Signs. Together they have over 75 years of sign industry experience.
